Shiseikai enjoys a heritage second to none on the historical world of Shotokan_Ryu. Our lineage can be traced directlyfrom Kanga Sakugawa (1782-1865) through Sokon Matsumura (1796-1893), through Yasutsune (Anko) Azato (1828-1906) and Yasutsune (Anko) Itosu (1830-1916) to the founder of 'modern karate' Gichin Funakoshi (1868-1957) and Kentsu Yabu (1866-1937). These masters were instrumental in the development of karate in Okinawa. Gichin Funakoshi (a student of Sokon Matsumura, Itosu and Azato) met with Makoto Gima (1896-1989) (himself a student of Kentsu Yabu) whilst both were in Japan. It is docuented that the two men demonstrated karate together It can be said tht Gichin Funaksohi and Kentsu Yabu were instrumental in the early development of Shinkin (Makoto) Gima. Funakoshi and Gima demonstrated the Okinawan art of Karate at the Kodokan, the home of Judo; and that demonstration caused the acceptance of karate in Japan. Gima is best known as a 'Shoto Ryu' stylist and founded the Tenshinkan and Shiseikai associations. Amnong Makoto Gima's senior students were Ikuo HIguchi, Mitsunori Kobayashi and Hidetada Narumi. Narumi himself was the early teacher of the Shiseikai Dojo senior instructor R. Sidoli. Both were re-united under the Gima_Ha Shotokan-Ryu Karate-Do Association in 2010.
