We at Shiseikai Shotokan-Ryu Karate Academy enjoy a heritage that can be traced directly from Kanga Sakugawa (1782-1865) through Sokon Matsumura (1796-1893), Ankoh Azato (1828-1906) and Yasutsune Itosu (1830-1916) to their successors Gichin Funakoshi (1868-1957), Kentsu Yabu (1866-1937) - Shihan Dai to Itsosu, and Makoto Gima (1896-1989). The teachings of these great men have been cascaded to Makoto Gima's senior students and the modern day masters Ikuo Higuchi, Mitsunori Kobayashi and our own Chief Instructor Hidetada Narumi. The dojo name 'Shiseikai' evokes an image of strength to those who recognise the Japanese characters. 'Shi' (Kokorozashi) means resolve, ambition, and intention; 'Sei' (Makoto) means sincerity, honesty, fidelity, and truth, and 'Kai' can be taken to mean school or meeting. Thus 'Shiseikai' can be translated as the 'meeeting of heart or spirit'. Our aim is impart karate that is authentic, and committed; karate that has 'heart'. S. EDWARDS, Assistant to the Head of Instruction.
